The Great Invitation – Week 2

Matthew 11:28–30 - Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

“The Invitation to Apprentice”

Question - Why don't Christians look more like Christ?

Dallas Willard -“The idea of having faith in Jesus has come to be totally isolated from being his apprentice and learning how to do what he said.”Apprenticing to Jesus helps to form Sustainable Rhythms

1. The Practice of Pause

Four Principles of the Biblical Sabbath:

a. Stop

Matthew 6:25, 34 - Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?... 34 Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself"

b. Rest

· work

· physical exhaustion

· hurriedness

· multi-tasking

· competitiveness

· worry

· decision making -> decision fatigue

· errands

· talking

· technology – cell phones, tablets, computers, social media

c. Delight - Play

d. Worship

Pete Scazzero -
“On every Sabbath, we experience a sampling of something greater that awaits us. Our short earthly lives are put in perspective as we look forward to the day when God’s kingdom will come in all its fullness and we will enter an eternal Sabbath feast in God’s perfect presence. We will taste his splendor, greatness, beauty, excellence, and glory far beyond anything we ever experienced or dreamed.”

2. The Practice of Pace

Craig Keener –
“Jesus’ yoke is not lighter because he demands less, but because he bears more of the load with the burdened.”

3. The Practice of Patience

4. The Practice of Perseverance
