Sermon On The Mount: Week 3 - Blessed Are The Meek

Sermon #
3
in the series

Matthew 5:5 – “Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.”
Series: The Beatitudes – Week 3

Main Idea:

Meekness is not weakness—it’s strength under control.
It’s power surrendered to God, expressed in humility toward others, and rooted in the character of Jesus.

Key Point 1: Gentleness is when I choose to surrender to Jesus in every moment.

  • Biblical meekness = strength yielded to Jesus.
  • Story: Baptized for the wrong reasons, but God used it to bring true surrender.
  • Romans 12:1 – Present your body as a living sacrifice.
  • Problem: Living sacrifices like to crawl off the altar.
  • Paul: “I die daily.” (1 Cor. 15:31) → Surrender is a daily decision.
  • Whether you know it or not: Your will is always at war with God’s.
  • Application: Ask, “Jesus, I give You control again.”

Challenge: Start your day on the altar… and stay there.

Key Point 2: Gentleness is shown when I choose to submit to others with a humble heart.

  • True gentleness flows from surrender to God → expressed in submission to others.
  • Eph. 5:21 – “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
  • Submission ≠ Oppression
    • Oppression: Power forced from the outside.
    • Submission: Yielding from the inside.
  • Marriage example: “You are more important than I.”
  • Culture says: “I matter more.”
  • Jesus says: “Put others first.”

Challenge:

  • Let others go first.
  • Lift others up.
  • Serve and listen.
  • Speak up against oppression (Prov. 31:8–9).

Key Point 3: Gentleness is displayed when I reflect the character of Jesus in a harsh world.

  • Phil. 2:3–5 – Value others above yourself; have the mindset of Christ.
  • Gentleness reflects Christ’s heart in a harsh world:
    • He flipped tables—but never lost control.
    • He carried strength with humility.
  • Matt. 11:29 – “I am gentle and humble in heart.”

Challenge:

  • Be different.
  • Be like Jesus.
  • Be gentle.

Bottom Line:

“I reflect Christ by choosing others over myself.”
That’s what Jesus did on the cross.
Despite everything—He chose us. Again and again.

Closing Questions:

  • Do you need a fresh surrender today?
  • Is there someone you need to say, “I haven’t treated you as more important… but that’s going to change”?

Takeaway Summary

Surrender daily to Jesus.
Submit humbly to others.
Reflect Jesus’ gentleness in a harsh world.
