The Ten Commandments — The Fourth Commandment

Mark 2:23–28 | July 19, 2026

Big Idea

Because Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, He invites us to receive God’s holy time — a gift that restores balance, re-centres delight, and frees us from every false master.

Opening — The Fourth Commandment and the ASAP Culture

Zakhor(Hebrew for “remember”) means more than recalling the past — it means keeping Sabbath before us and living in a way that honors it.

•We live in an ASAP culture: as soon as possible. It can quietly become a lord — and when urgency becomes a lord, it’s not just a scheduling problem. It’s a worship problem.

•the idol beneath our ASAP culture is a trio —efficiency, autonomy, and omnipresence.•Sabbath is holy time — set apart for stopping, resting, worshiping, and delighting in God.

“The world is held together by God, not by me.”

I. Sabbath Restores Balance

Point:Balance is not something I manage perfectly. It is something Jesus restores when I stop trying to hold everything together myself.

Three Reasons

1. Jesus confronts a distorted Sabbath (Mark 2:23–24) — The Pharisees see a violation; Jesus sees hungry disciples. They guarded the rule but lost the mercy of the gift.

2. Jesus brings Scripture, mercy, and need together (Mark 2:25–26) — David and his companions receive the consecrated bread. Holiness and mercy were never meant to be separated.

3. Jesus restores Sabbath under His lordship (Mark 2:27–28) —“The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath… The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

Key Lines-

Darrell Johnson: “Sabbath is not holy because we keep it perfectly. Sabbath is holy because God blessed it and set it apart.”

- “We do not manufacture holiness through exhaustion. We receive holy time from a holy God.”

- “The opposite of workaholism is not laziness. It is balance.”

II. Sabbath Re-Centres Delight

Sabbath is not simply stopping activity — it is returning to the centre, to God.

Three Reasons

1.Sabbath brings us back to the hub(Nouwen’s wagon wheel) — The rim is schedules, texts, pressure. God is the hub.“The farther we live from the hub, the more the rim controls us.”

2.Sabbath re-centres delight(Isaiah 58) — “Delight is not selfish escape. Delight is receiving life from God with gratitude.” 3.Sabbath is formed through surrender, not mastery— the Nicaragua testimony below.Testimony — Nicaragua-Situation:Exhausted in the water — deeply depleted, not just physically tired. -Tension:Could not organize, produce, or control his way out. What happens when the person who always carries everything reaches the end of himself?

-Actio: A quiet, prayerful word —“Be still and let go.”

-Result: God brought him back — not to teach passivity, but to call him back to trust. “A sacred pause is not escaping responsibility. It is returning responsibility to its proper place under the lordship of Jesus."

III. Sabbath Refuses False Masters

Point:Jesus is Lord — so urgency, exhaustion, productivity, and anxiety are not.Three Reasons1.Sabbath is tied to deliverance(Deuteronomy 5) — “Remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out.”

2.Pharaoh’s system still speaks today(Exodus 5) — More bricks. Less straw. Do not stop. Do not worship. Do not remember. Do not be free.

3.Sabbath extends rest to everyone under our care— sons, daughters, workers, servants, strangers, even animals.“No one under our care should be broken by our expectations.”

“If Sabbath is a gift, then our lives should become more generous, not more demanding.”

Summary and Invitation — Receive the Sacred Pause

•The question isn’t “Do I understand Sabbath?” It’s “Will I receive the sacred pause Jesus restores?”

•The invitation is not to try harder — it’s to receive the gift. Sabbath is gift before obligation, grace before discipline.

Hebrews 4:9–11— A Sabbath rest still remains for the people of God. Sabbath is the sign;Christ is the rest.

This week, ask:Where has my life moved too far toward the rim?

Practical steps:

- Stop producing. Stop proving. Stop carrying what belongs to God.

- Put the phone down. Share a meal. Worship. Walk. Sit silently in His presence.
