“God Is Doing a New Thing”

43:16-21ESV

“16 Thus says the Lord,
who makes a way in the sea,
a path in the mighty waters,

17 who brings forth chariot and horse,
   army and warrior;
they lie down, they cannot rise,
they are extinguished, quenched like a wick:

18 “Remember not the former things,
nor consider the things of old.

19 Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
   and rivers in the desert.

20 The wild beasts will honor me,
   the jackals and the ostriches,
for I give water in the wilderness,
   rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,

21 the people whom I formed for myself
that they might declare my praise.”

1. GOD REMINDS HIS PEOPLE WHO HE IS (vv. 16–17)

Remember “The Red Sea Moment”!

The God who delivered you before is still the God who delivers you now.

2. GOD TELLS HIS PEOPLE TO RELEASE THE PAST (v. 18)

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old.”

Two Dangers of the Past

1. The Past Can Hold Us with Pain

2. The Past Can Hold Us with Nostalgia

God says,“Don’t let the past—good or bad—blind you to My present and My future.”

3. GOD DECLARES: “I AM DOING A NEW THING” (v. 19)

  • God IS doing a new thing—not “will,” but IS.
  • Now it springs forth…Talks about Sudden Growth
  • Do you not perceive it?

Why do you think people fail to perceive the new thing?

  1. Because they expect God to do the old thing over & over again.
  2. Because their eyes were on circumstances, not on God.
  3. Because the new thing looked too small at first.

Sometimes, we tend to look for the “Spectacular” and miss the “Supernatural”

4. GOD MAKES A WAY WHERE THERE WAS NO WAY (v. 19b)

Before, God made a way through the sea. Now, He makes a way in the wilderness.

John 14:6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”

2 Corinthians 5:17, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come.”

Three Truths about the New thing:

. The New Thing Comes in Hard Places

.   The New Thing Will Not Look Like the Old Thing

Red Sea = waters were parted.

Wilderness = a path was created.

Desert = water was supplied.

Same God. New methods.

. The New Thing Benefits Others Around You

In John 7:37–39, Jesus declares, “Whoever believes in me… rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

John 4:13–14 “The water I give will become… a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

5. GOD REVEALS HIS PURPOSE FOR THE NEW THING (v. 21)

“The people whom I formed for Myself

that they might declare My praise.”

  • God wants to Restore His People

-   He wants us to Rediscover Our Identity

-   He wants us to Declare His Praise

Your story becomes someone else’s encouragement.

Your breakthrough becomes someone else’s life-line.

1 Peter 2:9, “You are a chosen people… that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness.”

Take Aways:

A. Remember God’s Faithfulness

If He made a way before—He will do it again.

B. Release What You Must Leave Behind

Not everything from this year belongs in the next.

“What are you calling me to lay down so I can step into the new thing?”

C. Expect God to Move in New Ways

The question is not “Can God do it?”

The question is “Can you perceive it?”

D. Embrace the Wilderness as a Place of Revelation

Wilderness is where God clears the noise.

Wilderness is where God shapes character.

Wilderness is where God teaches trust.

Sometimes the new thing blooms because of the wilderness—not in spite of it.

E. Trust God for Supernatural Provision

If God calls you into a new season, He will provide for you in that season.

As we close this year and step into a new one, may our prayer be:

“Lord, give me eyes to see the new thing You are doing, Give me faith to embrace it and walk into it, and Give me courage to leave the past behind.”

This year—let the new thing spring forth.
