Life Direction: Let Me Show You...

“Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. 17 And whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father.” — Colossians 3:16-17 (NLT)

For as long as I can remember, I have always had this overarching perception that no matter how good something was there must be a way to make it better. Fundamentally, I think that is an excellent notion to have. It can cultivate innovation and enhance creative solutions to increase effectiveness. However, sometimes its more useful to trust someone who has already proven the most effective path forward.

Often when I was younger, my Dad would give me a chore to do and then instruct me in the best way to complete the task. He would say, “Let me show you,” and proceed to demonstrate. I would then move forward with the work but it would take me twice as long as it should have because I was trying to prove there was a better way.

The incredible benefit we have as believers is that the message of Jesus isn’t just that He told us the way to live, but He said, “Let me show you.” Reflecting Christ’s example as a representative to this world is not only our calling but is the pathway to joy through thankful hearts!

Too often, we allow our culture of entitlement to rob us of the blessing of a thankful life. I have learned that, if our underlying notion is “I deserve this", it will override thankfulness. The action of thanksgiving is a discipline ignited by a humble acceptance of God’s amazing love and grace as well as His invitation to share that message with our lives.

Being thankful doesn’t come easy for some of us, but Paul reminds us in Colossians 3 to cultivate thankfulness in everything we do. How do we cultivate anything? We work at it. We nourish it. We do whatever it takes to make it grow and thrive.

As we walk through this season together, imagine what would happen if we all chose to make Thanksgiving more than a weekend in October, but the way of living, through which, we let the message of Jesus, in all its richness, fill our lives!

As you read through this edition of Lifelines, let’s worship Jesus together with thankful hearts for all that He has done, but let's also be determined to prove to the world how great He is by allowing our lives say, “Let me show you.”

God’s strength and peace,
