LIFE Giving: Thankful for a Life Well-Lived

October 5, 2018

In June of this year, our GT family collectively grieved the unexpected loss of one of our own, Rob Fleming. Though it was understandably a very difficult time for the Fleming family — Rob’s wife Shanty and their two children Katrina and Jonathan — they wanted to honour Rob’s life and passions by setting up the Rob Fleming Memorial Fund.

Because of the faithful and generous way that Rob lived his life, he left a resounding impact in his community, both locally and globally,

and with anyone who had the pleasure of knowing or working with him. Here at Glad Tidings, he gave generously of his time and talent, serving on the Board, with the Worship Team, on Alpha, and in other areas. When he passed, Rob’s generosity was reflected in the response of others to give towards his Memorial Fund, directed as donations to Glad Tidings.

In consultation with Rob’s family, the decision was made to direct these funds through ERDO (the humanitarian branch of the PAOC and an existing partner of Glad Tidings) toward a Borewell project in Uganda. Rob had a strong professional and missional interest in Uganda. Here are a few words from Shanty about that connection:

“Providing aid to Uganda is a special way to honour Rob. Uganda held a special place in Rob's heart because of the time he spent there during his work as a civil servant in partnership with the Institute of Public Administration of Canada. Rob travelled to Uganda many times to work with Ugandan civil servants setting up policy in public administration for fair governance. He was profoundly moved by his visits to camps for internally displaced people and a Watoto Village for orphans. Rob had hoped to return to Uganda to do humanitarian work in his retirement. We are grateful that we can honour him in this fitting way.”

The Borewell is a drilled well system that will provide clean water to a leadership training centre and approximately 350 families in the nearby village or Migadde. The Rob Fleming Memorial Fund will ensure that all of the required piping and solar equipment will be added to provide consistent community access to safe, clean water. If you would like more information on this project and other work ERDO is doing in Uganda, visit www.erdo.ca/uganda.

While we are still saddened by the loss of Rob, the legacy of generosity he left behind will have ripple effects at home and around the world for years to come. We are so thankful for Rob’s life and the Fleming Family.
