What is Alpha?

Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the basics of the Christian faith.

Typically run over eight weeks, each session looks at a different question about faith and is designed to create conversation. It’s just an open, informal and honest space to explore and discuss life’s big questions together.

What Happens at Alpha?

Food has a way of bringing people together. It’s no different at Alpha. Each session includes food, because it’s a great way to build community, connect, relax, and get to know each other.

The video talks are designed to be engaging and inspire conversation. Usually around 30 minutes long, they explore the big issues around faith and unpack the basics of Christianity, addressing questions like “Who is Jesus?”, “Why and how do I pray?” and “How does God guide us?”

Probably the most important part of any Alpha: the chance to share thoughts and ideas about the talk and ask questions in an open atmosphere without being corrected or judged. There’s no obligation to say anything; it’s an opportunity to hear from others and contribute your own perspective.

A typical evening at Alpha follows this approximate timetable:

At Glad Tidings, Alpha runs on Sundays from 7:00-8:15pm.

  1. Dessert (15 minutes): Everyone eats together and enjoys casual conversation.

  2. Talk (30 minutes): The main talk of the evening is a dynamic, engaging video addressing a key issue relating to the Christian faith.

  3. Discussion in Small Groups (30 minutes): Many guests say they have found the small group sessions to be the most valuable and rewarding time at Alpha. These sessions are opportunities to ask questions, express opinions and to discuss the topic of the evening. They also provide an opportunity to make friends and to bounce ideas around in a relaxed and open environment.

  4. Closing::The evening ends at 8:15pm, although guests are free to stay and chat if they would like.

The Alpha Course is free, however registration is required.

What about my Kids?

Our adult sessions are baby/child-free zones. While we love children and have provided childcare in the past, we are unable to do so at this time.

Who is Alpha for?

Alpha is for everyone!

Everyone is welcome to explore the Alpha course. People attend for a wide variety of reasons. Some want to investigate whether God exists and if there is any deeper meaning to life; others are concerned about what happens after death. Others may have never really understood the basics of the Christian faith or its relevance, if any, to their lives. People come from many different backgrounds, holding many different viewpoints.
